Your savings depend on your tax situation, province, and claim history. Your accountant can confirm the figure that applies to you.
Figures are estimates only. Actual savings depend on individual tax circumstances, claim volume, and plan selection.
An HSA cannot be combined with the personal Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC); the two are mutually exclusive. The applicable comparison is therefore an HSA against the METC, not an HSA against the inclusion of tax relief.

About this calculator
How the numbers work.
What the estimate includes, the assumptions behind it, and where to get an exact figure.
01 How is the savings estimate calculated? +
For an incorporated business owner, we gross up your medical expenses by your marginal tax rate: paying a medical bill personally takes after-tax income, so we calculate the pre-tax salary required to cover it and subtract the plan fee. For Group Benefits, we estimate claims at the 66% average usage reported by the 2025 Benefits Canada Healthcare Survey, apply Olympia's 8% admin fee, and compare that against a traditional insured plan priced with 20% to 40% overhead.
02 Why is the result shown as a range rather than one number? +
On the Small Business Benefits tab the range spans the two plans: the higher figure uses the Basic fee ($249) and the lower uses Plus ($499). On the Group Benefits tab the range reflects traditional insurance overhead, which typically runs between 20% and 40% depending on the insurer and the size of the group.
03 What marginal tax rate should I enter? +
Use your combined federal and provincial marginal rate, the rate applied to your next dollar of income. For most incorporated owners taking salary this falls between 36% and 42%. Your accountant can confirm the exact figure for your province and income level.
04 What is included in the plan fees? +
Basic is $249 per year plus GST/HST for a pure HSA, with no admin or setup fees and a $15,000 annual claim limit. Plus is $499 per year, tax inclusive, and adds travel and emergency medical insurance. Group pricing is an 8% admin fee on each claim plus $99 per year, with a one-time $335 setup and $40 per plan member added.
05 Why does the group estimate model 60–73% utilization? +
The 2025 Benefits Canada Healthcare Survey found plan members use 66% of their health spending account on average, from 60% for ages 18 to 34 up to 73% for 55 and older, because not every plan member uses the full limit. We model that range around the 66% average. This works in your favour: the 8% fee applies only to actual claims, so you never pay for allowance nobody claims, unlike a premium.
06 Can I also claim the Medical Expense Tax Credit? +
No. An HSA and the personal Medical Expense Tax Credit cannot both be claimed for the same expense. The relevant comparison is therefore an HSA against the credit, not an HSA against no tax relief at all.
07 Who is eligible to use an HSA? +
Eligibility requires that you take T4 salary, not dividends alone, in an amount reasonable for your role, as required by CRA rules for a Private Health Services Plan. We recommend consulting your accountant before opening a plan.
08 Are these numbers a guarantee? +
No. The calculator produces estimates for illustration only and is not tax advice. Your actual result depends on your province, income, claim history, and plan choice. Confirm precise figures with your tax professional.
